Oswego’s Annual Clean Sweep

12 Mar

Oswego’s Annual Clean Sweep
Oswego County annually holds a “Clean Sweep” to help make Lake Ontario a healthier environment. For eight years, this event has bought the Oswego community closer together. SUNY Oswego’s students also participate in the clean sweep to make their campus more desirable.
Volunteers meet at the McCrobie Civic Center on Lake St., adjacent to Breitbeck Park. Here, teams are given gloves, bags, maps and directions to start off the clean sweep and to ensure that all areas of the lake are covered.
According to Ellen Wahl, the director of retired and senior volunteer programs in Oswego County, “Oswego’s clean sweep joins a network of countywide organizations in partnership with state canal corporation.” These organizations conduct an annual canal sweep to beautify scenic waterways.
Student volunteers also participate in the clean sweep. Specifically, Greek organizations come together to help their campus and county. Last year, over 300 volunteers participated in the event.
